Youth must submit a minimum of three (3) pictures when checking in showing the various stages of the youth and their mentor building their Pinewood Derby car.
PRIZES:
Youth 1ˢᵗ Place $1,500
Youth 2ⁿᵈ Place $750
Youth 3ʳᵈ Place $250
1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ, and 3ʳᵈ prize money awarded for each class Age 5 -10 and 11-17. Mentor 1ˢᵗ Place will win $100 and redeemed at Fair Office.
Youth Prizes will be awarded in the form of a check solely payable to youth contest winner and must be picked up at the Fair Office. Cash Prize redemption requires completion of and IRS W-9 form by contest winner prior to youth cash prize distribution.

Pinewood Derby Showdown races start at Noon on Saturday, September 2ⁿᵈ, 2023.
Assigned check-in times: 8:00AM to 9:00AM
9:00AM to 10:00AM
10:00AM to 11:00AM
No late drop offs allowed.
Location: Tent near the entrances of North Hall
Preregistration is required, online or due at the Fair Office by 5:00PM CST Tuesday, August 15, 2023. No exceptions. All registered youth will receive a FREE admission ticket to the 2023 Walworth County Fair.
SPECIFICATIONS
• Body Specifications / Dimensions
o Width: Overall width (including wheels) shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
▪ Do Not Alter The Width Of The Car At The Axles
o Length: Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches (17.8cm)
o Height: Overall height shall not exceed 3 inches.
o Weight: Not to exceed 5.0 ounces – 143.4 grams measured on Official Race Scale
▪ Overweight cars may be reduced to 5.0 ounces (143.4 grams) or below before they can officially be entered, at the Race Day Check in.
o Center Rail Clearance:
▪ Cars must be clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the car.
o Wheelbase:
▪ Can be extended. Standard wheelbase is 4 3/8 inches from the center of front axle to center of back axle. Any wheelbase can be used. Wheels must be directly across from one another.
▪ Axle holes may be drilled into body of car as long as the specs are met. •
o Body Structure
▪ The main body structure must be made of pinewood.
▪ Wheelbase front and rear axles may be modified, as long as the overall length does not exceed 7 inches.
▪ No part of the car can extend past the start gate.
• Construction and Materials
• The car must have been fully constructed on or after June 1, 2023.
• Liquids and loose materials of any kind, in or on the car are not acceptable.
• Wheels
o Only official BSA wheels are allowed. Either (either new style and/or old style).
o All markings must be intact on inside and outside of wheel.
o You may use official BSA colored wheels.
o Outer wheel surface may be sanded, shaved, lathed or polished to remove any imperfections, true roundness, remove model castings and burrs, but must not be reshaped in any way to minimize tread contact or alter aerodynamics.
▪ The Fluting (small decorative dots) must be visible around the entire circumference.
▪ The tread/ contact surface must remain flat and parallel to the bore.
▪ The width of the tread must not be less than 7.5 mm
▪ No removing or reducing the letters or spokes or drilling additional holes.
▪ The following wheel modifications are NOT allowed
• No rounding of the wheel treads – they must remain flat
• No grooving, H-cutting, V-cutting, Crowing, Tapering or Dishing
• No altering the wheel profile
• No drilling sidewalls
• No filling of any wheel surface with any type of material.
o Officials will remove wheel(s) if lettering is not completely visible.
o Coning the hubs, truing the inside edge of the wheel, and removing the outer hub step down is allowed.
o Wheel Bore treatment is allowed including polishing, sanding and / or tapping.
o Wheel bores may not be filled and re-drilled
o Any wheel sanding, shaving or lathing on the inside of wheels must leave all inside wheel lettering and mold markings intact and visible.
o There must be four wheels on the car, however it is not required that all four wheels make contact with the track surface – one wheel may be lifted from the track surface.
▪ Each wheel must be mounted on an axel, on the outside of the car, on the side of the car
▪ Wheels may not be greater than 10 degree of an angle from the body of the car
▪ Each wheel must be attached by an axle – no guide pins allowed
▪ Wheels must be installed directly across from one another
▪ Wheels may NOT be reversed – wheels must be run in standard position
▪ Non-Dominant / Lifted wheels must meet wheel specifications.
• Axles
• Nail type axles but not limited to those found in the Official Pinewood Derby kit are to be used
• Modifications to the Axels are allowed that include straightening, sanding, polishing, canting, grooving, beveling, & tapering of axle head as long as the Diameter of the axle is not reduced.
• The Diameter may not be less than .084 inches (2.13mm)
• Axles can be mounted by drilling axle holes or inserted into the slots on car.
• Accessories
• After market accessories and decorations are allowed as long as they are firmly attached to the car and meet all other size specifications. No excessively fragile or glass items are allowed.
• Lubrication
• Graphite ONLY
• Approved lubricants include Graphite, Teflon
• Prohibited Items that CANNOT be used
• Magnets, springs or suspension systems of any type.
• Starting devices finish line devices, propellants, or propulsion systems
• Wet paint, or sticky substances
• Glass or excessively fragile parts
• Electronic or lighting devices (if lights are on the car they must be turned off)
• Wheel bearings, wheel covers, washers and bushings are not acceptable. (However, air shields mounted firmly to the car surface on the inside of the wheels are allowed, as long as they are clear allowing vision to the judges of the inner wheel markings. They must not be affixed to the wheels and must stationary to the car surface).
• No use of Guide Pins or such devices
• Axles and wheels attached to any device that mechanically alters rotation or spin.
• Logistics
• A four-lane track with electronic timer and starting line will be employed.
• Each car will be run on each lane with the race times being totaled.
• Cars will be assigned a different lane in each heat, such that each car will have raced in all four lanes.
• The individual cumulative totals for the four heats will be used to determine the winners of the event.
• Each race will be announced and the cars placed on the start line by a Race
Official(s).
• The Starting Line Race Official will make sure the cars are on the track properly, wait for the Computer Ready Signal from the Race Chairman and start the race.
• If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, or otherwise fails to pass the electronic timer on the second run, the car will be disqualified from that heat. If on the second run another car is interfered with, the race will be rerun without the disqualified car. The disqualified car will be assigned a time equal to 9.999 seconds.
• When the cars come to a complete stop at the finish line, the Finish Line Race Official will place the cars in a protective transport box and return the cars to the pit area.
• If it is the Race Chairman’s opinion that the electronic timer has failed to properly perform, the race will be rerun.
• This process will be repeated until all cars from all groups have run in all four
lanes.
Mentor Code of Conduct for Pinewood Derby
As a mentor participating in the Pinewood Derby event, I pledge to uphold the following code of conduct:
Guiding with Integrity: I will provide guidance and support to the participants while upholding the values of integrity, fairness, and respect. I will encourage them to build their Pinewood Derby cars to the best of their abilities, adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the organizers.
Fostering Creativity and Independence: I will promote creativity and independence in the participants by encouraging them to take an active role in the car-building process. I will offer guidance and suggestions while allowing them to explore their own ideas and solutions.
Demonstrating Good Sportsmanship: I will exemplify good sportsmanship by displaying respect and appreciation for all participants. I will congratulate winners, console those who did not win, and encourage a positive and supportive atmosphere throughout the event.
Respecting the Rules: I will ensure that the participants understand and follow all the rules and regulations of the Pinewood Derby. I will emphasize the importance of adhering to the rules and discourage any attempts to cheat, violate the guidelines, or gain an unfair advantage.
Resolving Issues Appropriately: If any concerns or issues arise during the Pinewood Derby, I will address them in a respectful and constructive manner. I will communicate with the organizers, officials, or fellow mentors, following the designated procedures for conflict resolution.
Being a Role Model: I will be a positive role model for the participants by demonstrating enthusiasm, patience, and a commitment to fair play. I will encourage teamwork, camaraderie, and ethical behavior among the participants, promoting their personal growth and development.
Accepting the Outcome: I will help the participants understand the importance of accepting the outcome of the Pinewood Derby races with grace and sportsmanship. I will emphasize that participation, effort, and the learning experience are more valuable than winning or losing.
By adhering to this Mentor Code of Conduct, I commit to creating a positive and enriching experience for the participants in the Pinewood Derby. I understand that my role as a mentor is instrumental in fostering a supportive and fair environment where participants can learn, grow, and enjoy the event to the fullest extent.
I understand that if, at any time, the officials of the Pinewood Derby feel that I, as a mentor, have broken this code of conduct or acted in a manner that undermines the integrity of the event, they may take appropriate actions, including potential disqualification from the event. I acknowledge the authority of the officials to make decisions in the best interest of the Pinewood Derby and its participants, and I will respect and abide by their judgments and rulings.

Eligibility:
• The Mentor Pinewood Derby is open to individuals aged 18 years and above that are registered as a part of the team participating in the Walworth County Fair's youth Pinewood Derby. Participants must register and comply with all event requirements.
Car Specifications:
• Width: Overall width (including wheels) shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
• Do Not Alter The Width Of The Car At The Axles
• Length: Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches (17.8cm)
• Height: Overall height shall not exceed 3 inches.
• Weight: Not to exceed 8.0 ounces – 226.79 grams measured on Official Race Scale
• Center Rail Clearance:
o Cars must be clear the center rail which is 1 5/8 inches wide by ¼ inch tall along the entire length of the car.
• Wheelbase:
o Can be extended. Standard wheelbase is 4 3/8 inches from the center of front axle to center of back axle. Any wheelbase can be used.
• Wheelbase front and rear axles may be modified, as long as the overall length does not exceed 7 inches.
• No part of the car can extend past the start gate.
• Wheel and Axle Modifications: Participants are allowed to modify the wheels and axles for improved performance. Aftermarket wheels are not permitted.
Construction Guidelines:
• Material Restrictions:
o Cars may be constructed from any materials as long as they are safe and comply with the weight and dimension requirements.
o Weight Placement: Participants have the freedom to place weights strategically within their cars to optimize performance.
Safety:
• Participants are responsible for ensuring that their cars do not have any sharp or protruding edges that could cause injury.
• Cars must be stable and not pose a safety risk to participants or spectators during the race.
Racing:
• Lane Assignment: Lane assignments will be randomly determined before each heat or race.
• Race Format: The event organizers will determine the specific race format, such as single-elimination heats, multiple rounds, or timed races
• Fair Play: Participants must race in a fair and sportsmanlike manner, avoiding intentional interference with other cars or lanes.
• Disputes: Any disputes or concerns regarding race results or infractions should be brought to the attention of the event officials. They will review the situation and make fair judgments.
Code of Conduct:
• Participants are expected to exhibit good sportsmanship, respect, and courtesy towards fellow participants, organizers, and officials.
• Any violations of the event rules or inappropriate behavior may result in penalties, disqualification, or removal from the event, as determined by the event organizers.
